Coming CLEAN – I couldn’t LIE!

Oh my – There was a large group of new peeps and old regulars to Urban Lifeclass in our new room at The Place Dance Centre in Euston on the day I was leading, so that was encouraging – but once we got the room sorted I noticed I HAD LEFT ALL MY NOTES ON MY KITCHEN TABLE!!

Since this Sunday 12th April Seminar was about exploring DECEPTION, DENIAL and Doublespeak. I HAD TO COME CLEAN. So after already confessing ( and trying not to show PANIC ) David said they were all in my head anyway, so I sat quietly writing down what I could remember.

After MORNING PAGES from The Artist’s Way, we started working through various exercises looking at ways in which we use these following three modes in our lives : What is the biggest lie we have told? . .  What does authenticity mean to us? . .  and Who are we really?

How do we navigate our lives as genuinely as possible through the stories we are told from our families and society as a whole, even the stories we tell ourselves… so we looked at who we were in terms of what we attract, and what makes us attractive, and to going underneath and looking at our flaws and owning our shit.

After a 15 mins eye-gaze exercise with breathwork in partners, we looked at ways in which ‘we suffer for love’ to get what we want. How do we do this in our relationships and even in our public lives?

69f125b44cb557d959142c20175f6c80

In small groups of fours we discussed various ways we ‘suffer for love’. Each group then fed back five examples each to the larger group and I made a list of them all: Do you identify with any?

They echo aspects of CODEPENDENCY.

1. People pleasing/not causing a fuss.
2. I am here 24/7 for you, I will do anything to keep you happy…
3. Manipulating emotions to get acceptance – saying something to gain the acquired response.
4. Guilting someone to get something.
5. Bullying.
6. Pity – seeking or giving.
7. Buying love.
8. Not asserting your own needs – playing the victim.
9. Passive/aggressive modes such as sarcasm.
10. Misinterpreting what has been said to you, knowing that is wrong. but not bothering to really understand the truth as it is easier to misread something.
11. Sabotage.
12. Creating a problem to achieve sympathy – a negative spin.
13. A competition of stress.
14. Faking illness for attention.
15. Refusing love/pulling back/keeping a distance to test love.
16. Being ‘good’ for praise or approval.
17. Flattering and flirting – complimenting for manipulation.
18. Refusing help, putting yourself out there as distressed but rebuffing.
19. Emotional shutdown rather than telling.
20. Humour – using it to deflect and withdrawing it to play the miserable/serious one.

Everyone then went through the list individually, wrote down concrete examples of when they use these techniques and who with – like a confession of what we can do to other people and damage ourselves.

DIY-farmhouse-kitchen-table-51We then went through the list and chose two that resonated strongly and in the next week to observe when we do those things and see if we can change those habits. A hard thing to do but being honest with ourselves about our actions and agendas is a step in the right direction to freeing ourselves from DECEPTION, DENIAL and DOUBLE-SPEAK, in a world where we are surrounded by half truths, shadowy words, twists and turns – we only have to look at the election campaigns at the moment!

. . . and when I got home, my notes were there on the table.

and David was right, it WAS in my head, the notes tallied exactly with what I wrote down in panic! It just goes to show. NO LIE.

Orchestrating Energy – Sunday Seminar May 24th – Euston/Kings Cross with Rebirthing Breathwork. 12noon – 8pm £70/50

8409

In the creative world it’s easy to be dominated by other peoples controlling energy, or outside of this sphere, like in an office, the same over-powering tactics can often operate. The Line Manager, Director of a Production, or a Publishing House can easily crumble your esteem, confidence and creative thrust with a snarl, rejection or put-down when you know you are doing your best. It can feel personal.

Some of us enter these arenas with sub-conscious battle on our hands, reminding us how we survived family or education in order to live, survive or just about make it. Someone close to you will often reverberate the journey you have survived. If you had to shout to get heard growing up, for example, you may still shout to get your point across ( or your boss may just do this to you ). What we learn in functional relationships is that bounderies have a place and that instead of manipulation to control others energy, we need to take responsibility for our own energy spaces and learn to respond safely and clearly instead of silence or an inappropriate rancid rant.

Learning to exercise emotional restraint certainly heals the present, no point in clearing up past mess if you are still dumping like a child. This is why Urban LIFECLASS Seminars always focuses on Codependency Release and ends with an energy-releasing I hour BREATHWORK SESSION. Read the testimonials on this site.

1508090_10155157489970249_1138797668474256377_nOur Guest Trainer this month is MELEESHKA – one of the first pioneers of Rebirthing Breathwork in the early 80’s in the UK, at the same time as Diana Roberts, our Birthing Mother ( one of our Creative Collective Team ) was a guiding light in London with The Loving Relationship Training ( LRT ). Both will be in attendance to support your personal development on this day.

Some of you will recall that MELEESHKA co-led the Spiritual Retreat in Marrakech this year ( and next year January 2016 ) so if you are considering coming next January, this seminar will be a great introduction to over 30 years of experience and her non-conformative style.

With a background in the music industry, social work, creating empowerment trainings and now living in Glastonbury, with heaps of storyteller wisdom, Mel will focus on Internet Age realness not New Age pixie hats, as anyone who attended our Maroc Retreat will testify.

**NEW VENUE : https://urbanlifeclass.me/2015/03/20/our-first-year-and-a-new-place-to-play-in-london-2015-euston/  The Lecture Room : The Place, 16 Flaxman Terrace, London WC1H 9AT

Well served with numerous tube lines, close to Kings Cross & Euston Main Line Stations, even Paris & Belgium, as EUROSTAR is across the road, so even those folks in Kent can get to us direct in a short time. Registration starts at 12.15 pm. We break for lunch at 3pm for an hour, then continue till 8pm, giving time for peeps to travel afar, take dinner with friends or go home at a reasonable time and relax.

We are not part of THE PLACE programming or have any attachment to their activities, we are simply hiring The Lecture Room, so please do not contact them. The room IS smaller than The Light Centre in Victoria ( but just as expensive I might add ) but we will have comfortable chairs to sit on as well as yoga mats.

WELCOME if you are new to Personal Development, Groupwork or Breathwork. We don’t do special languages, New Age stuff or talking sticks. Other groups do those things so much better than us. We are just a bunch of creative people willing to change habits, addictions and depleting toxic relationships from our lives. If you are new, one of our team can contact you if you wish to answer questions. We don’t sell anything, or sign anyone up, we leave the choice up to you. You don’t need to be Creative, just willing to check out your life and how you can change the impact of all your relationships.

Well….I got there which was a start! That’s me, Sara, in the black poncho feeling the Maroc vibe.

I had been so stressed with work prior to the trip I truly didn’t think I was going to make it, so when the alarm went off on Tuesday 13th January at 2.30am that was it, I was off and the relief once I finally sat on that plane was indescribable. David came over on the flight saying we’d have to fill in an immigration form and produced a bunch of green pens in case we hadn’t brought any with us. What I didn’t realise was, this was to set the tone for the rest of the week. Being cared for, nurtured, considered, prioritised…..

Once we’d arrived at the airport, transport had been arranged and off we went to Les Borjs de la Kasbah right in the Medina, where we had beautiful pastries and mint tea whilst the hotel staff took our luggage to our rooms. On the arrival day some participants had treatments booked whilst others, including me had the Hammam arranged for the following day. I was quite happy to rest and get ready to meet everyone for dinner later on.

226394_10150302044984966_1481394_nMy room was absolutely beautiful, rose petals greeting me on the bed and in the bathroom! We were booked in for half board, a three course meal every evening with 2 choices and a breakfast fit for a queen, everything from fresh fruit, pancakes, pastries to home-made yoghurt.

The course was perfectly paced for me, the balance of group work, discussion, individual work and breath work allowed for processing. I had been along to a couple of sessions prior to the retreat, so had met a few members of the group and felt very comfortable with these sessions so the decision to go to Morocco was an easy one for me. I felt happy to surrender myself to the process, trusting and knowing I would be supported and accepted by the trainers and assistants. Although I believe myself to be an open person I thought I would not feel secure opening up in a group, especially with people I don’t know very well. However, the trainers, assistants and group participants were all very supportive and there was no pressure to share or to be anyone other than ourselves. I embraced it all quickly.

black-soap-used-in-hammamI have to say, the nurturing in the course extended to the staff at the hotel and spa. I have never had a Hammam and found the care and attention given to me by the staff to be very moving. It reminded me of being washed by my mother when I was younger.

After HAMMAM the Rebirthing breathwork experience was both powerful and gentle. I experienced a significant emotional shift and physical sensations new to me. The assistants supported me, and seemed to know exactly when to encourage me to breathe deeper and gave reassurance.

Musée-Berbère-Jardin-Majorelle-©AnneLataillade-2013The excursions, personal and group leisure time and the course was balanced perfectly, I never felt once that I didn’t have enough time for me, the course or getting out to see Marrakesh. We visited a Berber village, Yves St Laurent’s garden and enjoyed a Moroccan evening with belly dancer, traditional music and food. I don’t know how we fitted it all in but as I mentioned, it felt perfectly balanced. I met some beautiful genuinely caring people during my week, people I feel I’ve shared a significant experience with which has stayed with me.

red-love-heartSince returning I have already made some essential changes for my well-being, leaving my job being one, but more importantly, putting myself first which is a new phenomenon for me, and one I’m embracing and not feeling guilty about.

Facebook Suicide

SOCIAL MEDIA COMMENT by David Parker

2899416335_d7c7b29712In the 1950’s when colour came back in vogue after the darkness of World War 2, women fashioned themselves on movie heroines including home perms and colouring. The image makeover had begun.

Radio Luxembourg, a European short wave radio station playing pop music, followed the American radio tradition of product sponsorship and jingles, which explains why Friday Night was always ‘AMARMI Night’. Amarmi was the L’Oreal of the day, a hair dye you could use at home rather than use the expertise of expensive hair salons. But you could always tell a home job and it was noted with glee by some women in particular, eager to pounce and point the finger that that woman was a ‘suicide blonde’. Dyed by her own hand.

In the Internet Age we can easily makeover our identity on dating and social networking sites like facebook and perform *facebook suicide* by simply deleting or deactivating our virtual reality. It’s a modern version of walking into the sea, pile of clothes on the beach and starting again somewhere else.
Various theories abound the net as to why people do this to themselves with the most popular one being *overwhelm*. Too many friends, messages, event invites, chat buddies, pokes and promotional spam being the cliff they jumped over. Very different indeed from the *suicide scarers* who share their emotional despairing plight online and ask for help or role play assistance.

facebook-death2With security scares, hackers fears and serious stalkers most people using facebook provide fake information somewhere to protect themselves, so lying about age, birthdate or even work details are commonplace. Most of us don’t really care if someone calls themselves Tumbleweed De Bior, is 96 and has a *complicated relationship*. We would be surprised if they hadn’t.

It’s all part of the performance, the alter-ego of amusement. But god help the fake who fails to amuse, who reports what petrol station they have just visited or has 5000 friends but only 5 ever reply to posts. Unforgivable. Then you get serial relationship addicts who perform a service to us all, reminding us that posting *IN A RELATIONSHIP* two weeks after that first date is also the first step toward Codependency Anonymous. Like bystanders at the Colosseum, we watch and stare as the lion of temporary love snarls at the brave illusion of longevity. Then the inevitable happens – it ends in tears and the facebook friends/rescuers rush in with kisses on a stretcher, identifying the pain of rejection, offering hearty soundbites to cover the wounds of failure and unfairness of it all. But two weeks later, they return with another trophy in hand on FB, another victim, another David to fight the Goliath of approval addiction. Now that’s what I call real facebook suicide.

No boundaries, limited emotional intelligence, no time to waste. It’s called ‘love’. The addiction to be approved of. Codependents are inclined to be a bit all or nothing, hard on the outside, soft centred toward the rim, waiting, searching for solution but often living in the world of the *unavailable*. They can have high goals, even higher ideals and an extreme sense of perfectionism wrapped around a core of procrastination. Like Lord ‘Mandy’ Mandleson they are “Fighters not Quitters*, often *coping* with life instead of living it for higher purpose. Many people with long term illness fit this type, I certainly did, but like others, with help and experienced functional support learn to live again, despite circumstance, without blame or inner revenge of the world around them. We discovered a level of acceptance leading to spiritual growth, gratitude and self respect.

Facebook-suicide.jpgWithin the urban dictionary *facebook suicide* refers to deleting and disappearing identity from cyberspace, via overwhelm, information overload, a serious stalking presence or an act of attention like a teenager sulking in his room. Until we learn to face the world on it’s terms, we will always attract rejection.
I focus on three words in my seminars : REJECTION, RIVALRY & REBIRTH. By playing with and accepting rejection as normal and healthy, we grow into adults. By releasing the need to be number one all the time, and solving sibling rivalry, the requirement for competition and winning withers. You have already WON, why the need to WIN again? . . and again?

images-3When someone wins around you – bathe in their glory, honour the aliveness not the death of losing. Jealousy can be the kiss of death. Never compare and despair. Don’t be tempted to destroy your creative outputs and your ideas – put them away – for the drawer can be pulled out another day for review and refreshment. When you take this approach to life, the law of attraction delivers peace.

Facebook suicide, or the un-intentional duvet day, procrastination and separation from human contact are all elements to watch in order to heartily belong to the world of living, not existing, coping or suicidal thinking. Deleting yourself from life, risk, rejection and experimentation is simply a slow death of spiritual energy. So take a deep breath – and savour your life adventure –
